Nakuru Project started in 2004, as a part of Pedro Cavadas Foundation, established and headed by Dr. Pedro Cavadas. It began a surgical humanitarian mission to Nakuru, the capital of the Rift Valley province, were about half a million people live.
The main goal of the 2004 trip was to give free surgery to low-income families. This was happily achieved during 2 weeks, with 53 surgical procedures being performed between 29th of November and 10th of December 2004.
The most common problems were burns and trauma secuelae. We have peformed many reconstructions in children up to 7 years-old, specially after deep burns and heavily contracted scars. Adult patients were operated on due to traumatized limbs, many of them never been treated before.
This programme was developed under host Dr. Peter R. Oduor, who also took care of coordinating operating theatre, patients enrollment and surgery himself. The Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital was chosen for surgery.

The Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital is a health centre with good surgical conditions. There are five operating rooms, and although the equipment is old-fashioned, complex surgical procedures up to 4 or 5 hours can be performed safely.
Burns and trauma secuelae were the most frecuent conditions found, although we have also performed surgery on congenital hand and genitalia malformations, tumors and cleft lip/nose. Lilian Chepkwony and Caroline Atieno had severe conditions, and have received a great care during surgery and in-patient nursing.

All of them have colaborated in caring and surgery of these patients, showing their superb excellence and human quality. We are grateful to all of them. Thank you very much.
Lilian Chepkwony
Lilian is 16 years old and lives in Sotik city with her mother. She has never been to school and already works helping her mother to look after other seven brothers and sisters.
Her family suffer from neurofibromatosis, a rare condition in which many areas of the skin are deformed by undermining neural malformations. She had a neurofibroma that compromised her left face, ear, scalp and neck.
She was operated on under general anesthesia, the tumor was removed and her ear was reconstructed. There have been no complications, and she is happily recovering at home.

Caroline Atieno
Caroline is 21 years old, is a Luo and lives in Kisumu. She is epileptic.
Four years ago, while she was suffering from an epileptic seizure, she fell over an open fire, which resulted 3rd degree burns, including forehead, eyelids, cheeks, lips, nose and ear . She has completely lost vision in her right eye.
Her husband abandoned her following the accident, and she now lives with a friend. Her hair conceals her face deformity and affected eye.
Her case is complex and requieres further surgeries. This time we proceed to free scar contracture of her eyelids, adding skin grafts. We think that her lip, nose and ear can be successfuly reconstructed next year.
